How concentrations are reported
Chlorine is a disinfectant — it's intentionally added. The MCL is a maximum residual disinfectant level (MRDL).
Health Effects
Eye/nose irritation, stomach discomfort at high levels. At MCL levels, not expected to cause health effects.
How It Gets Into Water
Water additive used to control microbes (disinfection byproduct of treatment)
How to Reduce Exposure
- 1Activated carbon filters (most pitcher filters) effectively remove chlorine taste/odor
- 2Letting water sit uncovered for 30+ minutes allows chlorine to dissipate
- 3Chlorine is added intentionally to keep water safe; very low levels are protective
Always look for NSF/ANSI certified filtration products. Certification means the filter has been independently tested to remove the stated contaminants.
